Turned & Scrolled Christmas Ornament – Compound Scrolling

November 14, 2022 By Billy Burt Sr Off

Alan Stratton (As Wood Turns) asked me if I was going to enter the Christmas Ornament Challenge this year. I told him I would so here is one of my two entries. I took a 1 7/8″ square blank of cherry and turned (or tried to) the finials. Then I put it on the scroll saw and made the compound cuts for the inside. This gives it the resemblance of an inside out turning, but it was a solid block of wood. Once the turning and cutting was done, it was time for a few hours of sanding and shaping. I finished it with gloss spar varnish. While it looked good, it was missing something. I decided to add a little Santa inside and it was just the right touch. This was much more difficult than I imagined it would be, but I’m happy with the end result. The ornament measures 2 1/4″ by 6 3/4″. And my wife LOVES it, so this one will go on our tree. Enjoy.
